THE BIG PICTURE
The relationship between coach/spiritual director and client is a close one and before I begin to work with you, I arrange an interview during which we get to know each other. Not only do we have to respect and trust each other, but we must feel that chemistry that says, “this relationship will be rich and enlivening. It was meant to be” All interactions between us, both verbal and written, are held in the strictest confidence.

My mission is to inspire you to go beyond your usual ways of seeing life and yourself. During my work with those dealing with life challenges, I extend an invitation to explore new territories that go to the heart of the issues that preoccupy and often immobilize us. With those seeking a deeper relationship with the Divine, I help to create a mood and environment where the Soul can speak, and where one’s thinking mind can become quiet enough to enter into the Presence of God.

Sessions are held either in face-to-face meetings or over the phone. The frequency of these meetings is determined at the beginning of the relationship and varies according to the needs and desires of the client. (See, “How it Works”)

Here is more specific information about Life Coaching and Spiritual Direction.

When I first was referred to Jane I was frozen by fear of an imminent surgery I had put off too long. A head injury had changed my perceptions and mobility limitations wrenched me from world traveller to homebound. I was rebuilding from a place where I didn't know myself. Jane's ability to weave the streams of work, soul, past, present and future and her ability to help be be kinder to myself made such a difference for me in my personal growth journey. I found that I would experience a second or third "opening or awakening" weeks after our sessions. It may be the empowerment she imparts. I felt more able to help myself each time I have worked with Jane.

LIFE COACHING

I believe that our life experience is determined by the way we see the world, and not simply by the things that happen to us. Each one of us has a unique way of seeing his or her problems, issues and challenges. This “way of seeing” comes partly from our personalities, partly from who we are genetically, partly from our backgrounds, partly from our culture (including our spiritual beliefs), and from society itself. No two people having exactly the same experience have exactly the same reaction to it. Neither of them is right or wrong. Each way of seeing opens up some opportunities for action and closes others.

At the very moment a life challenge arises, these “ways of seeing” rush to the fore and determine the path ahead. They determine:

  • whether you will ask for help – or not,
  • whether you isolate yourself or seek community,
  • whether you sink into resentment or resignation, or move to acceptance and optimism,
  • whether you recognize and accept your own feelings, moods and emotions,
  • the actions you will or will not take,
  • how honest you are with yourself and others, and
  • how your body experiences life’s challenges -- as tension, discomfort, and ultimately, disease, or as pleasurable sensation.
Only when you know these things can you consider other options that will open up new worlds.

If you are a person who passionately wants to make the most of life no matter what the external circumstances, you’ll be inspired by an approach that gently allows you to shift any perception that no longer serves you in your difficult situation. At a time when your energy is at a premium due to stress, you’ll be happy to know that you will be taught, and encouraged, to relax, regroup and recharge.

Because I know that everything takes place within a spiritual context, I also include the spiritual dimension in our coaching conversations. Please read on for a fuller explanation of my approach to spiritual direction.

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

The mission statement of “Spiritual Directors International” includes the words, “Accompanying others seeking the Mystery we name God.” It goes on to say, “In this time, Spiritual Directors International responds to this call by tending the holy around the world and across traditions.”

I interpret this to mean that I tend and nurture the impetus innate in all of us, towards wholeness and towards the divine no matter what our spiritual belief or tradition. To be effective in this mission, I include in my own life the essential elements of contemplative practices such as contemplative prayer, journaling, art, and continuous training that enable me to face, with you, the challenges of our times.

I believe that indeed, we are at a critical time in the history of our world. While seemingly chaos reigns, a deeper and unknowable Truth is working itself out. We are all a part of this Truth, and in accepting this and seeing ourselves as individual, unique and beloved parts of a larger Whole, we gain access to a way of being that was, in the past, known only to the mystics.

Mystics were usually people who lived a contemplative life, outside of the society of their time. Today, we are all called to be mystics out in the everyday world, yet living close to the Mystery, in intimate conversation with the divine, bringing new light, energy, wisdom and grace to our own lives and to the earth.

I sought Jane's guidance and support at what I thought would be a transition to different work to create more balance in my life. As we got into the process, however, I came to realize that moving jobs would just be yet another distraction from some real issues I had been running from for years - and those issues were creating the lack of balance in my life. The issues had also become "my story". How I loved to talk about "my story" and make it real in my life! Having a coach was not like therapy - or having someone there to help "fix" me. Jane provided a truly caring ear and reflected back the effect of what she heard. It was a gentle steering into present moment awareness and detaching from "the story" I'd woven about my life that was keeping the past alive and well. I'm much more comfortable with allowing myself to just be where I am now - yet open to changes if they come. I was/am very grateful for the time I spent in coaching; it was just what I needed.

As a coach who incorporates the spiritual element in my work, I adhere to clear ethical standards. I am a teacher and companion on a journey, not a minister, healer, therapist or counselor. I embody the simple principle of being a person called to help other people, using my skills and training as guidelines to a deeper experience. I have answered The Call.

I invite you to join me.

"To reach something good it is very useful to have gone astray, and thus acquire experience."
